The Officer Allen Jacobs Gang Resistance Education and Training (G.R.E.A.T.) summer camp is designed to provide students with a positive recreational and educational experience during their summer break, while providing the Greenville Police Department Community Response Team (CRT) and School Resource Officers (SROs) an opportunity to mentor and positively interact with their students.
The program’s primary objective is to serve as a preventive measure to resist the influence of youth crime, drug abuse, violence, and gang involvement. Emphasis is placed on building a motivational spirit through teamwork, sportsmanship, community, and self-discipline, which allow youth to foster a positive relationship with law enforcement. Participants will be exposed to G.R.E.A.T. life skills, positive role models, role-playing activities, games, and safety skills.
In Memory of Officer Allen Lee Jacobs
The G.R.E.A.T. Summer Camp is named in honor of fallen officer Allen Lee Jacobs, E.O.W. 3/18/2016, as a tribute to his tireless efforts in the Greenville community to prevent and reduce gang activity and violence. Officer Jacobs spent his career engaging with the community and enthusiastically participating in community-based gang prevention programs, and his last moments relentlessly pursuing violent gang members.
Officer Jacobs was a certified G.R.E.A.T. instructor and had just finished teaching his first classes before his death. It is with great pride that the Greenville Police Department offers this summer camp resource to the youth of Greenville in an effort to continue Officer Jacobs’ work to reduce the impact that gangs and violence have in our neighborhoods.
